Cultural heritage site “Railwaymen’s Palace of Culture”
Description:
The building, located at the address: Orel, Privokzalnaya St., 8, is accepted for state protection as a cultural heritage site of regional significance “Railwaymen’s Palace of Culture”, in accordance with the decision of the Small Council of the Oryol Regional Council of People’s Deputies dated July 6, 1993 No. 81-7 “On measures to improve the protection and use of historical and cultural monuments of the region”. The Oryol railway station was built in 1868 far from the city. Until 1865, there was a forest here, and only the Moscow highway was nearby. Everything changed with the construction of the Moscow-Kursk railway. The stations in Oryol and Kursk were built in the same – neo-Gothic – style. Initially, it was planned to build a standard station building for the first class station of the Moscow-Kursk Railway in Orel, as well as in Tula and Kursk, according to the design of the architect M. G. Arnold. However, in the end, Arnold’s design was implemented only in Tula, while for Orel and Kursk, Emperor Alexander II personally chose the design of the Orel architect Joseph Thibault-Brignolle in March 1866. The old station was destroyed during the Great Patriotic War, blown up by the Nazi invaders in 1943, only part of the basements survived. The restoration of the Orel railway system, and until 1973 the station itself, was supervised by Pyotr Vasilyevich Kazantsev (1911-1992), born in Tambov, was an honorary citizen of the city of Orel. A comprehensive approach was taken to the restoration of the station. The architect S. I. Mkhitaryan developed a design for a completely new Station Square. The buildings were designed in the then-current “Stalinist Empire” style, and the square itself was supposed to be round. For a long time, the Oryol railway station was considered the most beautiful in the country in the Soviet Union. The project was repeatedly highly praised and cited as an example. The Railway Workers’ Palace of Culture still remains one of the architectural gems of the city of Oryol, rightfully called an Architectural Monument.
