Identified cultural heritage site “Mass Grave”
Description:
The burial site was established in 1942 to the west of the village of Stroevo, on the edge of the forest, when a military unit buried Soviet soldiers who died in the battle to liberate the village. In 1958, a monument was erected on the grave. A brick five-step pedestal was built. On the pedestal is a plaster sculpture of a two-meter-tall soldier in a cloak, with his head uncovered, holding a soldier’s helmet in his left hand and a machine gun in his right. A memorial plaque with the inscription: “Eternal glory to the heroes who died in battle for the Motherland. 1941-1945” is embedded in the pedestal. The burial mound is covered with turf and flowers are planted on it. The burial area is surrounded by a metal fence, and a bench is installed inside the fence. In 1963, the remains of three soldiers were transferred to this burial site from individual graves in the village of Novo-Uspensk (L.G. Shchelgunov and N.M. Torpachev) and in the village of Papaevo (L.V. Shubin). The first two were buried in a common mass grave and memorial plaques were added to it with the inscriptions: “Shchelgunov Lev Grigorievich, 10.06.1911-30.07.1942, to husband, father from wife and children” and “Tropachev Nikolai Mikhailovich, 1908-1942, from wife and children”. For the remains of L.V. Shubin, thanks to the efforts of his relatives, a separate burial site was arranged inside the common fence. In 1964, L.V.’s brother Shubina surrounded it with an independent metal fence and installed a memorial plaque on the grave with the inscription: “Shubin Leonid Vasilyevich, 04/02/1923-03/21/1942. Brothers and sisters remember you always.” Thus, the burial has two graves: one common and one individual.
In total, the burial site contains the ashes of 161 soldiers.
